Outline

This ICC pre-conference workshop will focus on the development and application of intelligent geospatial solutions for disaster preparedness and response, drawing on the collective expertise of four ICA commissions. Smart maps leverage advanced geospatial analytics, machine learning, and real-time data integration to improve situational awareness, advance predictions and warnings, ensure quick mapping for decision-making, and facilitate rapid response and recovery in disaster scenarios.

The workshop will address the role of artificial intelligence in automating data processing and predictive modeling for rapid hazard assessment while also exploring how integrated geospatial information, sourced from both authoritative and volunteered data, supports national and regional disaster management efforts. A key focus will be creating intuitive and interactive geovisualizations that enhance the user experience for both expert and public audiences, ensuring that critical information is accessible and actionable.

Through collaborative sessions that might include interactive demos, technical tutorials, and case studies, participants will examine challenges such as real-time data integration into digital twins, foundational computer vision and language models, explainable and reproducible systems, map-ready data, user-centered map design, and visits with local university departments.

Participants will also explore how digital transformation initiatives within national mapping agencies, with help from academia and industry, can support resilient mapping infrastructures adaptable to crisis conditions. Combining insights across these commissions, the workshop aims to establish best practices and technological strategies for developing responsive, intelligent cartographic systems that aid in early warning, preparedness, and crisis response at local, national, and global scales.
